What I’m Reading This Winter

I like to keep a few books going at once so there’s always something to suit my mood. I usually choose my books based on the recommendation of others and am always ready to hear why someone is loving what they’re reading.

I thought it would be a good idea to share what I’m reading right now for those who are looking for their next book.

“Letters to the Church” by Francis Chan

81eclU0ZD5L

Genre: Nonfiction

I’ve always thought that Francis Chan was a great author and preacher but to be honest, he scares me a little. Not because I don’t trust his teaching or that I think he lacks moral fiber. In fact, it’s the opposite. I find him to be too truthful and his faith so real that it challenges my own.

He wrote this book as a collection of thoughts he has for the state of the local church today. In just the opening chapters he has already exhorted me and reminded me of why I’m committed to the Church, flawed though She is.

“The Dearly Beloved” by Cara Wall

Genre: Fiction

I have really enjoyed every monthly selection from Jenna Bush-Hager’s book club and this one was no exception. This book tells the story of two couples through the decades who’s lives are intertwined over their shared convictions, or lack thereof. I’ve found myself relating to some of the stories as both of the husbands in the book are ministers. There’s something so beautiful about seeing a characters whole life unfold in a novel.

“Risen Motherhood” by Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler

Genre: Nonfiction

I first heard about this book by listening to the weekly podcast by the same name. Both the podcast and book have been a welcome companion as I begin to navigate the waters of motherhood. They view and explain everything through the lens of the Gospel and it is a steadying book that I know I will look at again through the years.

“Maybe You Should Talk To Someone” by Lori Gottileb

81k9Uam6RLL

Genre: Memoir

As the title may suggest, this is a book about therapy. Not a textbook or a how-to manual, but a book full of stories about the authors experience with her clients as a therapist and as a client herself. It’s true that what happens in a therapy room is special and mysterious, but it is also ordinary, two people sitting and talking.

The stories she shares are heartbreaking and also humorous. I’ve enjoyed each and every chapter so far.

The New Testament in 90 Days on the Dwell App

1200x630wa

At the end of 2019 I was feeling ungrounded in my Bible reading. In the past, I could find quiet time each day to sit and read but it had become hard between nap schedules and everyday life responsibilities to feel like I could do that. I came across the Dwell app and was interested because it was a bit different than any other audio Bible app. Dwell sets the Scripture readings to beautiful instrumental music and has created helpful listening plans. I’m currently listening through the New Testament in 90 days and also listen at night to a peaceful night’s playlist, composed of various Scriptures.

I have and still prefer to read on actual paper. However, I can’t let my preferences be used as an excuse for not being in the Word. For this season of my life, I am grateful for a beautiful recording of Scripture.

What books are you reading or have you loved? I always appreciate a good book recommendation. 🙂

  1. Amy , I just finished the German Midwife, a fiction book about a midwife during WW2. Also The Giver of Stars, a great story about a library in the Appalachia’s in the 1940’s. Loved them both. I read a book about every 3 days during the winter and am always looking for new recommendations.

  2. Definitely interested in “Letters to the Church” and “Risen Motherhood”! I just finished reading “The Girls Who Went Away” about teen moms during the 50’s-70’s who surrendered their babies for adoption, mostly against their will. I’m slowly making my way through “Unoffendable” by Brant Hansen, which is extremely convicting. I’ll also be starting “The Color Purple” as soon as it arrives for me at the library, in honor of Black History Month.

    1. Renae,
I just for some reason saw your comment. Thanks for sharing those with me. I am definitely interested in those titles you listed. I remember reading “The Color Purple” several years ago but reading it again would be great. I also love using the library! So good to hear from you. 🙂

  3. I’ve enjoyed a devotional, The Beautiful Word. I’ve began reading, The Battles belong to the Lord by Joyce Meyer and cant lay it down. I’ve enjoyed Ruth Ware’s fiction, Girl in Cabin 10 and The Turn of the Key. A fun must read is Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank, for she is a beekeeper. I’d like to add more nonfiction in my repertoire. Many adventures in reading! Mom
